I don't think you'll ever see anything like this again. They have these pitiful sign ordinances now to make sure that signs are "tasteful."

I'm afraid you are right, Joel.
My father has worked in the industrial/professional sign and neon business for 40+ years, my grandfather did the same for a while after the war. Some of the signs you see in this city they both had their hands in most likely. I have grown up around the sign business, it's a shame that these beauties are becoming extinct.
Neon is a truly amazing art form in itself and these signs are a reminder of the beauty something as simple as the glow can be. For me, it's something personal. My grandfather passed years ago, but I can drive by Geo. Morlan plumbing on Foster and see his "dancing water heater" he designed, still going, as well as the Palms, or a number of others he put his stamp on. It's like having a piece of him with me.
We are doing ourselves a great disservice by letting these slip away.

I remember a place that looked very much like this set up in inner Northeast not far from Burnside, near the river. It was probably the mid or late 80's. It had very positive reviews but it did not last very long. Am I alone in remembering this small piece of Portland History?
