and the closed local grocery store
no longer has a phone booth out front.

Why pay a dollar for a five minute phone call when you can carry your phone with you? Plus you don't have to hunt down a pay phone. It's a no brainer.
And what's that big yellow book hanging on each phone. I have some recollection of such tomes but can't quite place it.
