The problem wasn't so much the loading on of debt, it was the car. No one wanted to ride the bus when a car was so much more convenient. No waiting for the next scheduled bus, no walking to the bus stop in the rainy Portland weather. Just get in your car in your nice dry garage and go wherever you wanted, whenever you wanted.
