Hotel key cards are activated using a machine seperate from the reservation system, and are not linked to any guest information. I see that old myth is still popping up occasionally. I've been in the business many years. The key is programmed to open a specific lock for a specific time period, after which it goes void and will not open anything until its reprogrammed for the next guest.
