Lendon Smith was a kook. He blamed most childhood maladies on vitamin deficiencies and recommended megadoses of vitamin A and C. The only problem is that the doses he suggested were, in fact, dangerous. For instance, he recommended 20,000 to 30,000 daily units of vitamin A for pregnant women, a dose high enough to cause birth defects.

In 1973 Smith was placed on probation by the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners for treating heroin addicts with Ritalin in the false belief that heroin abuse was caused by childhood hyperactivity. Ritalin is a controlled substance, not a good thing to be giving to people adddicted to controlled substances.
