A GREAT JOCK DECIDES TO HANG UP HIS EARPHONES...LEE ROGERS

 Lee Rogers is one of the few on the air in this town that could do his show with blinders and all the equipment going into failure, and make it entertaining.  He is one of the last old school pros on the air. Lee started in broadcasting in 1969 right after leaving the service. Lee scored great ratings in The Twin Cities, San Diego, Seattle, Denver, a few small towns starting out and ended with KUPL 15 years ago. Lee won the award from Billboard that every disc jockey dreams of, Market Program Director of the year along with being nominated for the Country Radio DJ Hall of Fame, and again Lee is up for this award in 2009. Lee's last day on KUPL will be December 10th, a morning to tune in for sure. I asked Lee to give me 10 answers to 10 questions...Here we go......

My first few months on the air, it was the Monday after Halloween, and this old lady called this talk show I was doing. She proceeded to tell me she was tired of the kids coming around to her house with bars of soap and writing F****  F**** F**** F**** all over her windows. I froze and the whole thing made the air!

10 Questions for Entercom Radio's Market Manager Erin Hubert!

Tell us about your first radio job?

 I was selling for 97.1 KCNR-FM out of college; FM’s answer, at the time, to Craig Walker and KGW-AM Radio.  Our station was on top of Council Crest at the base of a bunch of radio towers in a rundown building that used to house KPTV and KPAM Radio.  If I sneezed, my cubicle wall fell over.  If it snowed or iced, we were off the air.  Fabulous memories working with some of the greats in radio.  Glynn Shannon was our afternoon jock at the time, and now hosts afternoons on KGON.  And now 97.1FM is Charlie, one of Entercom’s stations.  I’m back where I started.

 

If you could re-visit any restaurant in Stumptown from your days growing up, which would it be?

 Yaws

 Bugatti’s

 

Last book read?

 “Buzz Marketing” by Mark Hughes (business)

 Anywhere as long as I’m with my family….usually Black Butte

 Google to find info. I need or Mapquest to figure out where I’m going (I don’t spend any leisure time on the web….no time)

 

Best business decision?

 Getting into this crazy, fun business, and also going to work for the Blazers, although I was very reluctant to leave radio at the time.  12 years with the Blazers opened up my perspective outside of media, exposed me to new technologies, and presented wonderful career growth opportunities (great organization).  I gained a longer term, strategic way of thinking that now balances my approach in a very fast-paced, what I call, ‘24 hour season’, media world.  I always knew I’d come back to radio, and gaining outside experience has provided fresh eyes which helps to avoid running seven radio stations with a rear view mirror perspective.

 

What is your favorite Entercom station and why?

 They’re all my babies (1051 The Buzz, Charlie, 1080 The Fan, KGON, 94/7, The Wolf, and Deportes 910 – gotta plug them!), and I love them all equally for the very things that make them unique and vibrant brands….just like my kids!  And, oh yeah, I miss KISN!!!  Now THAT was my favorite radio station growing up!

10 QUESTIONS FOR MR. WEATHER....DAVE SALESKY

Stumptowns most trusted weather guy, Dave Salesky answers Mr. Stumps 10 questions. Tune Dave in at KATU-2 weekdays.

1-What in your opinion will Stumptowns winter be like weather-wise?   We've a mild El Nino Pattern developing across the region, usually this gives a milder than average winter and possible drier as well.

 

2- After leaving KGW for KATU, you were on the beach for a while until the contract ended, what did you do with your time away from the weather board?  It was a neat summer spent a couple of weeks fishing in Alaska, Rode my motorcycle through Canada, My daughter and I spent two weeks on the east coast. I got caught up on all my honey do projects and rode my bicycle a lot.  

3- Last book read?  A book on hospice care. Sorry the title slips my mind right now. My mom was in hospice before she passed away, I wanted to learn more about the incredible people that do hospice work. The next to last book was TR, the biography of Teddy Roosevelt.  

4- Favorite TV show & web sites you frequently check?   Favorite TV show is Spooks it's a BBC series about MI5. Website As the lake churns and University of Washington's atmospheric sciences page  ( hey I'm a weather geek ) 

5- Favorite movie of all time?  Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed in It's a wonderful life. I have never made it through without tears. 

6- Favorite restaurant in Stumptown?   I eat red meat... Morton's Steakhouse 

7- Favorite & things about your job?  It never gets boring, weather is dynamic and changing so my job is to try to predict what mother nature is going  to do. Never an easy job, but challenging. 

8- Obsession? Be the best. 

9- Favorite place to vacation?  July on the Kenai River, big fish in the river, eagles flying over head, bears on the beach and the laughter of friends. It's pure bliss. 

10- What will Stumptown readers be shocked about Dave?  I really didn't plan on doing this for a living. I really wanted to be Pilot for a major airline. I fell into my first TV job while learning to fly in Alaska. At 6'3" I'm the shortest male in my family and I'm left handed.  Gee not much to be shocked about here 
 

10 QUESTIONS FOR PHILIP CARLO ....THE BEST MAFIA WRITER

Born and raised in Mafia Kingdom, Bensonhurst, New York, Philip Carlo is the best writer of non-fiction mafia books in the world. I started with his book on "The Ice Man" (Richard Kuklinski) which was impossible to put down. I immediately purchased "Gaspipe" (The story of the Mob Kingpin Anthony Casso) which I have to say is a masterpiece. Both books by Carlo are as good, they offer a vivid portrait of a mass-contract killer of Polish descent that could never be a made guy, and Gaspipe that offers a roller-coaster ride into the life of a King Pin as big as Gotti. The new release from Philip Carlo is my current read and it's a fascinating look into the life  of a Mafia Psychopath, Tommy Pitera who murdered over sixty people for the Mob. Carlo's writing is so amazing, you think it's fiction....but who could make this stuff up!!! Once you start a Carlo book, trust me....you will not put it down.

Philip Carlo at the age of fourteen witnessed a good friend being shot to death in broad daylight by a Colombo Family hit team. He himself was shot during a gang war fight. Carlo grew up on one of the toughest streets in the country but escaped a life of crime by writing about it in vivid details. He is also the author of the famous book about the infamous Richard Ramirez (The Night Stalker). He now lives in Italy. Here are my 10 questions for this amazing and talented author.

#1: Your books on the Mob are fantastic, the information is so detailed inside the mafia, have you ever had threats on your own life due to the intense  non-fiction releases?

I don't talk publicly about any threats or exposure I have as a result of my work.  Suffice it to say, I keep myself properly insulated and aware.

#2: The story on Gas Pipe was my favorite, this book gave such a portrayal of such a powerhouse in the mob. He was so dangerous but likable! You had the connection for sure due to being neighbors with Anthony's family. What was the feedback from his family after the release?

To be honest, I did not interact with his family because of strain regarding his relationship with the world outside of prison. 

#3: The Ice Man was a chilling read for sure. How long does it take you from start to finish writing your books?

The Ice Man took me a little more than three years, with research and the actual, physical writing and rewriting.  On the average a book takes me about two years. 

#4: Tell us about your new release:

My new book, The Butcher, is a classic battle between good and evil.  The DEA are on one side and a Bonanno capo is on the other side.  I think it's the best thing I've ever written.  Check out the video we just posted on my website:

#5: Where does the mafia stand today? Are their bosses at the level of Gaspipe & Gotti today?

The Mafia today is a far cry from the Mafia that began at the turn of the century.  Drugs, the stiff penalties involved with selling drugs, has much to do with its being undermined.  Plus, most all the people entering the mob today never knew what it was like to be hungry. 

#6: Favorite Restaurant in New York?

I would assume my favorite Italian restaurant?  Hands down, that would have to be La Scalanlella on 3rd Ave and 61st in New York

#7: Last book you read?

I am a voracious reader.  The last book I read was The Life and Times of Jesse James. 

#8: Are you working on another book now? Any hints?

I'm just finishing a memoir about my life, which involves all the interviews I've done to write my books and the fact that right now, I'm being stalked by the grim reaper. 

#9: Have you had any interest in a movie deal for the Gaspipe story?

A lot of interest.  It's going to be the best mob movie ever made. 

#10: What are Gaspipes kids up to today?

 #1- STRANGEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED ON THE SET (LIVE TV)?  Hard to narrow it down to one.  Once witnessed a guy running from the cops while I was on air.  We took it live while I sang the theme song to "Cops".  Or could be the time the Miss Oregon contestant said "Shit Head" on the air.  I could go on, but I have 9 more questions..

 #2- FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN STUMPTOWN?  The one I have a gift certificate to.  So many great places, so wherever it's free, or at least saves me money during our economic downturn.

 #3- LAST BOOK READ?  Chi Running.  I want to run, have it be easy and not hurt.

 #4-FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?  Not sure.  I'll just tell you the one and only movie I have on my iPhone.  "Talladega Nights"

 #5- FAVORITE WEB SITES TO VISIT?  Is that something on the internet?  I think the internet is just a passing fad.

 #6- PERSON MOST INTERESTED IN MEETING?  My kids, when they become adults.  I hope I don't screw them up now.

 #7- FAVORITE CAUSE?  Cancer research and support.  Cancer sucks.

 #8- FAVORITE VACATION SPOT?  Hawaii, Jamaica, our back yard. Anywhere with good friends (wife included).

 #9- MOST RESPECTED COMPETITOR IN THE BUSINESS?  The only way his is a competitor is the fact that he's on the air the same time I am.  Mike Chase.  What a freaking talent!

 #10- FAVORITE ALBUM OF ALL TIME?  Always changing.  I just listen to the radio.

10 QUESTIONS FOR RADIO LEGEND ROGER W. MORGAN

I was 18 years old and just got hired at Kisn Radio. The Program Director told me that I would be called on the air "Roger W. Morgan"....How exciting! They had a jingle for me and everything. After two weeks of being Roger W. Morgan on Stumptown's power house top 40 radio station, I was called up to the General Managers office. I thought "Its curtains for me"....But the situation was that I would need to select a new catchy air name because THE REAL Roger W. Morgan was coming from our sister station in Omaha Nebraska (KOIL)....The REAL R.W.M would be doing mornings on Kisn. I was just the weekend and fill in jock at the time. So I became "Dave Stone" and Roger and I became friends from day one on his re-arrival to Kisn. He was Jim Hunter in the 60's when he was a kid! Roger gave me a huge break to work in San Francisco on legendary KYA radio. He was Program Director and doing the morning gig. Roger has been featured in movies since he was a kid living in Salem Oregon, broad-casted a popular syndicated oldies show nation-wide, respected by radio people all over the country and is a great public speaker. Today he is living the dream in the Virgin Islands doing a radio talk show and enjoying life. Roger is a class act all the way and I'm proud to be his friend. Here are my 10 questions for Roger W. Morgan.

#1: HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN RADIO AND HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU STARTED AT KISN?

  I started in radio in my hometown of Salem while I was a high school in 1957.  My dad was a noted rodeo announcer (Mel Lambert) and I knew I had to do something to make him proud.  That worked, but he hated the fact that I changed my name!

 I was 21 when I first worked at KISN under the name, Jim Hunter.  Joining that staff of madmen just as I turned old enough to drink legally might have been the only bad timing associated with that event.

#2: WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST MEMORY OF WORKING AT KISN DURING THE BIGGEST DAYS OF THAT STATION? 

 It was a staff meeting that occurred shortly after I started at KISN.  The meeting had been called to deal specifically with News Director Whitey Coker's decision to "borrow" that highly identifiable "News mobile" and to take it to the coast for the weekend.  As a huge staff of employees sat nervously awaiting the question, station owner, Don Burden screamed, "Why did you take the news mobile to the coast for the weekend?".  Whitey's response set the tone for the entire time I worked at KISN.  In his halting style, Whitey replied, "Because, Mr. Burden...it was raining in the mountains."  I learned that the opportunities with Star Stations were endless, but there was a big price to pay.

#3: FAVORITE RECORD OF ALL TIME? 

I have favorites from each of the 5 decades that I've been in radio...but my all time favorite is "Life in the Fast Lane" by The Eagles.

#5: MOVIES YOU HAVE BEEN IN AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FLICK?

I always tried to convince people that I worked in a lot of films, but that wasn't the case.  There were only 4.  Then rodeo clown, Slim Pickens landed parts for me in two films, the first in 1952 when I was just 10, "The Story of Will Rogers".  I was trained at an early age to twirl a rope like Will Rogers and I got a brief cameo role as Will Rogers when he was very young. 

The second film came in about 1957.  "Tonka" starred singer, Sal Mineo and, again, I had a brief appearance doubling as Sal Mineo in a scene where I roped a wild horse from a canyon call over in Bend.   I was a high school Junior at the time. 

In about 1982, I was an "extra" in "The Toy"starring Jackie Gleason and Richard Pryor.  And then, in 1976, I played the part of one of the Mayor's staff in the Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry Film, "The Enforcer". 

My most recent venture into the movies was in 2001 when I worked with Huey Lewis and Roger Daltrey in a Hollywood "slasher" film called, ".Com For Murder".  (Not one of my proudest moments.)

My favorite movie of all time is "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest"...My Dad played a small role in the film, playing the Harbor Master who argued with Jack Nicholson when they were taking the boat out for a day of fishing. I was sitting in a theater in Sacramento California seeing the film that everyone said was the best movie of the year. Suddenly, my Dad's face filled the screen. I had no idea he was in the movie until that moment. What a kick!

#6: LAST BOOK READ? 

"Don't Stop the Carnival"...a book written in 1965 (around the same time I started at KISN).  The book was written by American author, Herman Wouk and reportedly is about his adventures here in the Virgin Islands where I currently live. 

#7: BIGGEST MISSED OPPORTUNITY? 

 I failed to get into the "business end" of broadcasting until I was well into my 40's.  I wish I had made the move from "talent" to "sales, management, and ownership, much earlier.

#8: FAVORITE WEB SITES?  

Facebook!  I'm a "Facebook Junkie".  What a waste of valuable time, but it has served to re-connect me with over 500 people who I might have otherwise missed re-visiting.

#9: PERSON MOST INTERESTED IN MEETING?  

Shirley Temple Black.  She was a good friend of my news person in San Francisco, Bonnie Chastain.  Bonnie promised to introduce me to Miss Temple Black, but she died of cancer prior to making the introduction. 

#10: YOU LIVE IN THE VIRGIN ISLANDS, A TOP VACATION SPOT...SO WHEN YOU LIVE IN PARADISE WHERE DO YOU VACATION?

  I've been here for about 9 years.  We've taken only 4 vacations...each to St. John, only 20 minutes away by plane.  They've been some of the most wonderful vacations of my life.  We usually swap homes with a friend of ours who lives there.  He, in turn, vacations in our home on St. Croix.  Hey, when you live in paradise...it's easy to find a good vacation spot only minutes from home!

Dick Bogle is a fifth generation Oregonian. From 1959 to 1968, Dick served on the Portland Police Department. In 1968 he became the first African American television news reporter in the Northwest when he was hired by KATU. After 15 years at Channel 2 Dick was elected to the Portland City Council. He served two terms before retiring in 1992. Dick is a freelance photographer and specializes in the legends of Jazz. He also hosts a terrific jazz radio show on KMHD. Here are my 10 questions for the multi-talented Dick Bogel.

ABOUT JACK OHMAN: 

Jack has been the editorial cartoonist for the Oregonian since 1983. He previously worked at the Detroit Press and the Columbus Dispatch. His cartoons are syndicated by the Tribune Media Services Group to over 350 papers around the country, including The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Boston Globe and many other prestigious publications. Jack has written or illustrated nine books with a new one ready for release this month. I look forward to Ohman's message that is created through art in the Oregonian. The cartoon above of Rosa Parks & Obama was printed on Inauguration Day and was printed in just about every paper around the globe. Here are my ten questions for Jack.

#1: Your favorite cartoon?

My favorite cartoon is the one I just finished on deadline. I've done about 6,000 for the Oregonian, so it's hard to pick just one, let alone remember them!

#2: Biggest complaint from readers over a cartoon?

Anything with an opposing viewpoint.

#3: My favorite (which I purchased for gifts) was the Obama-Parks-limo cartoon, how many were sold?

 We never know the exact number. We sold several thousand of them, I know that.

#4: How long does it take you to create a cartoon?

Depends. Two days to 30 minutes, or less.

#5: When did you decide to becoming a cartoonist?

I am not settled on a career. But for now, I think when I was about 19.

#6: Favorite Restaurant in Stumptown?

Savoy. No question. Sunday night fried chicken, have the succotash.
