Not only is this a very historic Portland radio survey with the Beatles taking hold of the #1 and #2 positions, it is when radio had imagination, features and great benefits to the listener. Today radio has been thrown down the corporate wall street hatch with non stop automation and syndication. The year was 1964 and when you think about it, the Fab 4 had taken the pain away from the JFK murder in Dallas. It brought fun back into America and for the world. Sure many parents complained, but my god when they made that first appearance on the Sullivan CBS show it was more than magic! We also had the DJ's that delivered "She loves you" and all the super smash hits that followed. In the 60's we LISTENED to the radio, today it is almost a distraction when it comes to music based stations. When you turned on this AM radio station,
you never knew what would happen next. They were creative and allowed the talent to actually do a SHOW, instead of just push buttons and read 3X5 cards that are pre-planned.
It is a shame that the young people can't get a dose of this today. They have no idea how much better radio sounded than the I-pod or hearing a show based out of L.A or New York.
This survey is proof that there was a hey-day in broadcasting.
