Oh how I wish we could have a rogue crook like Terry Schrunk back as Mayor of Stumptown. At least he was smart enough to get out of his scrapes with intimidation along with his network of back room cigar chomping pals. I loved reading about Terry in Phil Stanfords column in the Trib. That weekly piece was the only reason to pick up that paper...and it's FREE! Terry had his first scandal as Sheriff and was mixed up with racketeers who were plotting to "Open up the town" and was cornering then Mayor Fred Peterson with political reprisals by the Teamster Union bosses if he did not get rid of his Police Chief.
I also remember my Dad telling me that in the 60's (as Mayor) he was caught on tape taking a bribe of some fashion. But I'm vague on that memory. Time Magazine had a huge story on Schrunk and his pals on Monday Jan 4, 1956. I will have to stop at Camerons and try to find that issue. Its on the web for all to view. Terry & Frank Ivancie were the last of the old school political guys who made it interesting. This current Mayor is not amusing or engaging, he is just plain shallow, arrogant and boring.
Heard he took cash for anything & everything!

I remember some of that when I was growing up. When you were a member of a Multnomah County commissioner's family you couldn't avoid it. Used to see Terry with granddad often.

The story is when he was sheriff that he picked up the bag or briefcase full of bribe money over at Lents Park. Bobby Kennedy came to town and personally prosecuted in court dear Sheriff Schrunk. Schrunk was acquitted of all charges against him.
