MEET DAVE BURNETT/OSWEGO GRILL

 

Today I tried the new Oswego Grill in Lake Oswego. My hat is off to Dave Burnett & crew who opened recently during these challenging economic times. First of all Dave did a terrific job on taking a Chilis Restaurant and re-creating it into a first class restaurant that is very comfortable & enjoyable. We all know the build out is only a fraction of what makes a new restaurant successful, it's all about what the kitchen delivers and service. Oswego Grill scores 5 stars in both departments. The lunch we had was terrific and very well priced for the quality. It is exciting to have a promising new restaurant in Lake Oswego. I drive by the restaurant every night on my way home from work, and have noticed the parking lot jammed. Good reason, it's a hit. Another key element to the success is having the owner on the floor mixing it up with guests. A lost art in the world of faceless chain owned eateries.

WHEN SEASIDE WAS COOL & STUMPTOWN MEMORIES

Seaside was cool until the powers that be in city hall decided to fall for that monstrosity to be built on Broadway at the turn-around. The structure is so out of context for the town & street that on a nice summer day it actually blocks the sun from reaching the street! It took all the cool charm Seaside had. So enjoy the tax dollars that it generates (city hall)....more and more Stumptowners are heading to Cannon Beach and the Southern Ore communities. It is kind of sad walking around Seaside now. So much for that...here is a new list of old haunts.

This is when Starbucks was cool. THIS STORE-THIS LOOK! Today Starbucks has the magic & appeal of a 7-11. I liked it when Starbucks sold COFFEE, today you can buy gift-ware, crappy sandwiches, cd's.......They should of focused on creaky wood floors and COFFEE! I read a few days ago that Starbucks is going to roll out ICE CREAM! Stick to what you know & do best....and that Howard Schultz is COFFEE.

Barney Smith is the worlds greatest toilet seat artist. You can visit his museum of over 600 unique and different seats! Barney is ready to turn 81 years old and the retired plumber continues to create object's d' art. Each seat is numbered, photographed and cataloged. Etched into the back of each seat is a numerical code, documentation  about the materials used for decoration, the work's particular inspiration, and information about who donated the seat materials. You can visit Barney's Museum in San Antonio Texas.

WHAT WOULD WALT DO?

Disney announced lay-offs yesterday due to slow traffic in their parks. A friend e-mailed me last night when this story broke on NBC. He said in his message, No surprise to us, last week we spent $1700 for three nights just to be on the park property. Tickets for admission (Day pass) were $66 each. 

If Walt was around, he would of put out Disney park packages that would drive traffic, such as $99 entry passes for a family of four. They know damn well, once inside they spend money.....lot's of it.  Maybe a special offer for families out of work. That would be a nice touch. Un-employment is itching it's way to 11%. There are allot of families with entertainment on the back burner. When you think of Disneyland, two things come to mind....1: LINES    2: EXPENSIVE.  Now we only have #2 to worry about.

Honest to Barney Rubble, you would think you were in a Flintstones episode! That strip get's a ton in tax revenues, why should any street be like this? These are ACTUAL photographs of the pot holes on 23rd. When you turn off Burnside and drive down 23rd there are hundreds of these. This is a DREAM for tire stores in town. It is like a wild west ride at Wally World! I can't believe that merchants and property owners are not complaining about this. The whole state is pathetic when it comes to roads, but no joke......Give NW 23rd Ave a ride & see what I mean!

ONE MORE BLUNDER FOR THE CITY THAT WORKS!

The Nines Hotel located in Macy's downtown is going totally haywire. They ran a few million over budget on the face lift of the historic M&F building and the big surprise is....(DRUM ROLL PLEASE>>>>>>>) It has not clicked with the locals or travelers. Some nights this joint is empty.

Now the chain that owns this dog can't pony up the millions it was scheduled to pay, so the city that works gets this boondoggle. So let's count should we.....

CITY OF PORTLAND SHOULD BE ASHAMED!

  Rich's is one of the oldest cigar shops in the nation that first opened their doors in 1894. We all know that Oregon passed the non-smoking law, however....many establishments have been able to get a special exempt license for CIGARS only. A couple of blocks away, El Gaucho Steak House had one handed to them. But what about Rich's that is a CIGAR STORE for crying out loud? NO! Our fine folks (the city that works) will not give a CIGAR STORE the license due to a short list of ridiculous red tape such as how thick their walls are!!!!!!!! Now they have to go to the expense of hiring Attorneys to get this resolved. What a great town!
