anyone notice how quickly homes with no sweat turn into ghetto neighborhoods? something for nothing crowd doesn't give a damn.

back in the vanport days the phrases were Freddie The Freeloader and Welfare Mama.

the only thing that's changed is time.

Geez, Harder, racist much? That's sick.

Ain't it amazing how if you write anything even closely resembling the truth that the liberals will be there immediately with their name calling?

Oddly enough, there is not a single racist comment in The Harder's remark...but that doesn't stop Steve from screaming "racist." Kind of makes you wonder who the real racist is here. Kind of like criticizing Obozo and you're automatically a bigot.

When was the last time you heard a conservative definition of racism that wasn't itself a little bias and prejudice? It goes with the territory...it's to be expected.

I looked up "Obozo"...went down about three pages or so of "headlines and entries" and not ONE positive remark under this name. Mostly bias, bigoted, racist and prejudice articles and comments...hmmm...I don't understand.

Also, regarding Vanport...look up the history...if Vanport had been the average white, Leave it to Beaver neighborhood, the results would have been totally different. Articles, reports and stories prove it all...even the City of Portland would like to forget their embarrassment...it's all there...and I grew up hearing about Vanport for years...and my parents were republicans and they were embarrassed and ashamed...and they knew it was all color related!

I looked up Vanport, just to remind myself of a few things and came across that photo above...one of the captions under that photo read:

Vanport was never rebuilt. Most of the black flood victims were given temporary housing in dilapidated war surplus mobile buildings trucked to vacant land by Guilds Lake. After a little over a month of living in these circumstances, the residents organized a caravan to Salem and protest their living style at the state capitol. This happened on July 7, 1948 and made the front page story in The Oregonian.

That's all very nice Jim, but my argument stands. The Harder never once mentioned race. Race is inferred by Steve and now by you.

Ghetto, btw, has nothing to do with blacks. It dates back to Venice and referred to the part of town that was occupied by the Jews.

Leave It to Beaver was still nine plus years in the future at the time of the Vanport flood...so it couldn't have been the "average white, Leave it to Beaver neighborhood" that you mention.

Finally, Obozo is a slam. Obozo is the worst president ever...even worse than Jimmy Carter, Franklin Pierce and Warren G.Harding. That's why he gets to be called Obozo...because Bozo captures nicely how bad he really is. I doubt you will find the name Obozo used in a positive way...but you prove my point...criticize Obozo and you're a racist. It could never be that he is a disgrace as president.

I ask again: Who is the real racist here? The Harder, or Steve and Jim who want to make race an issue?

You've totally missed the point...congratulations!

Our family is white. My dad was a college student. Mom worked as what was then called a secretary.

We lived in Vanport until shortly before the flood. When we moved, it wasn't far; to Columbia Villa, near N. Adriatic between Fessenden and Columbia Blvd. It was an ethnically eclectic neighborhood.

Throughout my life I have given thanks many times for what I learned in those days of my youth. The experiences I had back then helped to armor me against prejudice, bigotry and racism. I learned acceptance.

My passage through life from then to now has been much less stressful and much more serene as a result.

"Ghetto" has nothing to do with blacks? Who knew?

AS WE HAVE EXCHANGED BEFORE MR. HATCH, I DID NOT LIVE FAR FROM YOU, WASHBURNE ST, TWO BLOCKS FROM COLUMBIA PARK, ABOUT HALF WAY BETWEEN LOMBARD AND WILLIS FROM 1952 TO 1964. I TOO LEARNED THOSE SAME THINGS IN MY UPBRINGING AND HAVE BEEN GREATFUL FOR IT ALL OF MY LIFE.

It is very shameful and disgusting that fellow human beings, irregardless of gender, race, or religious background were treated with such lack of regard and treated as lower than dirt. I support Joel 100%, Liberals created the term "Political Correctness" and claimed to be for the leaders of fighting bigotry, as if they were the ones who rode in on a White Horse and saved everyone, but yet with history, as it has been repeated, they have done very little in helping minorities get back on their feet, except to enable them by giving them things at the expense of others. The fact is racism is not tolerated by anyone today in society and those who, are do not usually get very far, and to those who claim it at the hint of truth are bigots in their own rights and deflect it to those who call them out on it.

It is classic dissociation of the truth to immediately brand one as a racist at even the hint of truth. Liberals cannot stand to be wrong even at the hand of their own wrongdoing, so they turn it on the ones who really wish to fix things and stop the enabling of the poor and the minorities. It is shown through history that Blacks, and minorities are not given fair opportunities and the "Liberals who think they are coming in on their White Horse as saviors, have continuously made things worse by enabling the poor to be poor. In the end, our maker God Almighty will judge each any every one of you who claim such lies and hold you accountable to it. I'd hate to be you in the end.

My guess is that you are white, right Mike?
Because although some of your theory makes sense, it reeks of white privilege.
It cracks me up when I see white men speaking about anything but what they know about, and never will.
Hilarious.

Check your privilege, trolls.
