In 1853 the Hines wagon train finally reached Portland after the 5 months journey on the Oregon Trail. In one of the diaries the entry says that... we came upon the Willamette River, and saw several low slung buildings among the trees on the other side. We were told that it was Portland. We crossed the Willamette on the Stark Street ferry.

It is amazing how much changed from that day for the settlers to the day this picture was taken.
