Here's some additional information about the U.S.S. Oregon's "Fighting Top" located down in Waterfront Park.
We almost wouldn't have that monument today if it wasn't for the "on-the-ball" efforts of the late Thomas Vaughan.

Most people around here remember Mr. Vaughan as the charismatic retired director of the Oregon Historical Society.
When he heard that the moth-balled battleship was about to be totally scraped, he said, "this just will not do!"
Tom got people in Salem together and saved the battleship's "top". He was there to dedicate this Memorial Day gift to Portland.

Mr. Thomas Vaughan was a true Oregon hero.
