Around 1950 my dad and grandfather bought a small apartment building in Vanport (just the building, not the land). They dismantled it board-by-board, pipe-by-pipe and wire-by-wire. They transported the salvaged materials to SW Portland (Luradel Street off of SW 35th). They spent 3 years of spare time building us a very nice home out of those materials. It's the only way dad could afford to build us a home. Most of the homes on that street were built by the veterans who owned and lived in them. Different times for sure.
