Don't remind me. It was about this time, when a friend and I were looking into buying a radio station, that a mentor told me, "Forget about radio. Radio is dying. Get into these new cellphones. That's where people are going to be getting all of their entertainment."
Stupid me. I just wrote it off as a mentor who was getting into his dotage and not thinking clearly. At least I didn't buy into the dying radio industry. And, although it took another seven or eight years, I did get into the Internet.
I remember a friend in 1983 replacing his traditional car phone will cellular. They were not for all by '89, but certainly were common. I remember packing the old beige brick with me for covering Hurricane Hugo in South Carolina.
This author seems to be confusing sat phones with cellular, which rely on instant, seamless handoffs of your call as you travel from cell to cell. Hence the name.
But yeah. Don't we all wish we'd saved a bit to invest in a cellular company. Or bought Apple with it was nearly dead in '86 at $4 a share. Or Google. Or.... just kill me now...

I predict Amazon to be the next Berkshire Hathaway. It’s a bargain at $1,800
