RFK was in Portland because the Oregon primary election was the following week. In 1968, Oregon was still one of the earliest primary election states in the nation. In those days the national newscasts would encamp to Portland for the primary. It was that important.

Yes, but Eugene McCarthy humbled him as only Oregonians can do.

I wouldn't say that McCarthy humbled anyone since when RFK was assassinated HHH decided to seek the nomination and won. McCarthy humbled RFK and HHH in the same way that Bernie will humble Biden.
