I had a slice of that seven-layer chocolate cake once. The icing was dandy but the cake was dry and tasteless. Kind of like those giant cinnamon rolls. Fine frosting but the rest was just white bread.

They used to have a roll similar to a cannolo, with coffee icing fill that was dynamite, never had a bad thing here.

I was introduced to Rose's during the Columbus Day Storm blackout when my mother just couldn't stand being cooped up in our candle-lit home in the deep suburbs any longer and took me for a late night nosh at Rose's since they had electricity along with the ginormous servings of everything good.

But, what I remember most about that evening is her pointing out the "junkies" sitting at the counter drinking coffee and smoking cigs; at age 15 it somehow felt like I had finally entered the big-time world of adults.
