If I'm not incorrect, today is the 40th anniversary of the main eruption event. The first ash and a minor eruption took place on March 27th, 1980. https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/msh/reawakening.html

I was just thinking this evening that in the space of just a year or so Portland had the eruption of St. Helens, the major ice storm of 1979, and a full solar eclipse. I remember making a viewer out of a first generation Nike shoe box for that one.
