Slabtown in NW Portland got its name in the late 1880s. A limber mill located in the area (remember this was rural Portland at the time) tossed out the cut ends of production and the wood, called slabs, was picked up by residents of the area to use for cooking and heating fuel.
The slabs were stacked in piles in front of the houses leading to the name of the area. It's now in the center of the NW District between Nob Hill (Forest Park) and The Pearl.

They had a great light-show-dance-floor during the disco era and then fabulous Country line-dancing later on. Don't know about the "fine food" though.
