Built in 1923 this building was the home of Old Homestead Bakery and classified ads in 1923 list the location as 12th & Hawthorne. I Don't know when Fred Meyer took over but the building is still there and the address is 1120 SE Madison. This photo I believe is the corner of SE 11th & SE Hawthorne.

And, Freddy's venerable "5th Avenue" brand!

Love this picture. Bathed in full sunlight between a good down pour. My-te-fine sweets made right here in Portland -- not Oakland, Chicago, or Stockton. I wonder why so much smoke out the chimney? Are they making black licorice?

Also notice the electric trolley bus lines above. One could come down Hawthorne there and turn left onto SE 11th avenue (watch out for the camera man!). Maybe for returning to the yard at 17th and Mall St at end of day.

A clean, cool and efficient way to travel before General Motors and Standard oil colluded to force transit systems over to smelly motorized buses.
