This was back in the day when home washing machines were a luxury. Remember how excited women were to win a washer/dryer pair on "Queen for a Day"? They were worth two or three months wages.

Meanwhile, at the laundromat, you had to watch your machines like a hawk because if you didn't someone who wanted to use the machine would pull your clean laundry out. Not only would you lose the machine, your clean clothes would be on the filthy floor.

Remember on "Friends" when one of the first tender moments between Ross and Rachel took place when Ross defended Rachel's machine at the laundromat?
