I'll go with real. My late in-laws had a very similar branch growing on the property they owned in the foothills of the Coast Range outside of Dallas. We surmised that a large branch had grown into the ground, was cut off, and branches grew up from it.

When you look a old oak trees you will often see large horizontal limbs or trunks, but looking at this photo with the vertical growth and different bark texture make me lean toward a altered photo. Or should I say it is a real "Stumper"

I hope it's real, just because it's so amazing.

I would love to say real, but as DG points out, the two differing bark textures make me say faux, although it is cool.
