Local merchant Joseph Shemanski built the 9 story Eastern Outfitting department store building in 1929 and it opened on 3/30/30 on the southwest corner of SW 10th & Washington. Eastern Outfitting grew at onetime to have 53 locations on the west coast and they were the first store on the west coast to offer installment payments. Joseph Shemanski died in 1951 and this store closed at the end of business on 12/31/53. This building was torn down and a new building was built on the site in 1956.

It's a shame this building was torn down for the ugly blue building that went up in it's place. Looks like it was a nice example of Art Nouveau architecture

ODXLexus, that is one of my major beefs, some wahoo comes along with taste in his shoe, and says I dont like this bldg, buys and demolishes it, for regurgitated tp. I lived in a complex that looks nice, but it was put up sp badly, and fast, it gets east wind freezeout in winter, and no moisture barrier. Next to St Johns Woods.
