Don Bowman actually had a record that broke into the Top 40 in some markets called "Chit Akins, Make me a Star." (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyqoCzKAuNI&ab_channel=DonBowman-Topic). I think it got some airplay on KISN in the mid-60s. KISN was all I listened to at that time, and I remember it.

Don Bowman also had a few other records in the same vein that got spins on country radio stations. He recorded a song called "Poor Old Ugly Gladys Jones" with Waylon Jennings (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ensM9Utyyjw&ab_channel=teddie488) that scored big county radio airplay. Listen closely and you can even hear one line sung by Willie Nelson.
