Nervine was mainly bromide an anti-convulsive that was found to cause as high as 10% of all admissions to mental hospitals for bromism, a kind of chronic intoxication. It was also the main ingredient in Bromo-Seltzer.

Dr. Miles later became Miles Laboratories, the maker of such products as Alka-Seltzer, Flintstones Vitamins, One-A-Day Vitamins, and Bactine. Miles Laboratories was sold the Bayer AG in 1979 and the Miles name was discontinued in 1995.
