Starr's collaborator on the artificial mitral valve wasn't another cardiologist, he was an engineer named Lowell Edwards. Starr was attracted to come to Oregon by a $10,000 grant ($100,000 in today's dollars) to practice in the Crippled Children's Division of the then University of Oregon Medical School.
Starr met Edwards (who was twice his age) and within two years they had a working artificial mitral valve. Starr also performed Oregon's first artificial heart transplant at OHSU.
