Woodfox wasn't exactly incarcerated for a crime he didn't commit. His convictions were overturned twice on procedural grounds related to the jury composition being racist, but at one point he pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He was released after 43 years mainly for reasons of health and the likelihood that after so long it would be impossible to hold another trial.

Of greater interest is that Woodfox was held in solitary confinement for virtually his entire bid, thought to be longer than anyone else ever. Although he once made the guilty plea, he had also maintained he was innocent of being involved in the killing of a guard.

RIP.Guilty or not.
