When they opened this span, the outgoing mayor of Vancouver walked through town, greeting his cconstituents as he went, and ended up in the woods on Tomahawk Island, across from Hayden Island, and hanged himself. He wasnt found for months.

Jann the Interstate bridge opened on February 14, 1917, but Vancouver Mayor Grover Percival did not go missing until October 17, 1920. At the time Hayden Island and Tomahawk were separate islands and the mayor would have had to swim or take a boat to Tomahawk island.

Mayor Percival was found a little over a month later on November 22, 1920 hanging from a small tree on Hayden island in a wooded area near the railroad bridge over the Columbia river.
