Last Friday 8/12 was the 60th anniversary of another United Airlines landing. On August 12, 1962 another United Airlines DC-8 bound for PDX landed at the small Troutdale airport thinking it was Portland. There were no injuries, but passengers finished their trip to PDX by Taxi Cab. The crew was relieved of their duties, and the next day another crew was able get the airliner out of Troutdale for it's short hop to PDX.
The takeoff of the DC-8 from Troutdale was on YouTube in a series of still photos.
I've heard it isn't uncommon for pilots flying into Portland for the first time to see Troutdale Airport and mistake it for PDX. They figure something's amiss when the data they get from flight control doesn't match up.
There was a bit on History the other night, it was pilot error, they didnt communicate for sh&t. With this and another crash, they started training better.
