I dipped smelt when they were running in the Sandy river in the early 1970's next to the bridge in Troutdale. I don't remember when they last had a run in the Sandy, and it looks like they are on the endangered list now.
My Dad loved to go out and you could rent the net and he would bring home Smelt that we would pretty much eat every night until we ran out. No freezer so we ate with the season. It's aptly named.
