Truth or Consequences, back in the radio days, solicited for a town that was willing to change its name. Only a handful of towns sought the prize and the little town of Hot Springs, New Mexico was the winner. The radio (and later TV) show came first.

Wasn't Bob Barker the TV host?

Barker was the third of five TV hosts. Ralph Edwards (the creator of the show) hosted on radio and was the first TV host from 1950 - 54. Then Jack Bailey (later the host of Queen for a Day) took the reins from 1954 to 56. Barker 1957 to 75. Bob Hilton, 77 & 78. Larry Anderson hosted the rebooted version in 1987 & 88.
