Built and operated as Albertson's from 1966 through at least late 1987, and at some point between then and Late 1990 it became a Thriftway store. The Lamb's truck in the lot would indicate it was a Lamb's Thriftway, until 1996 when it became a Walgreen's location.
I seem to remember some homeless man in the bus stop shelter but I think it was the 90's and it was Albertsons. Folks would feed him but he wouldn't leave-no incentive

Last night I left a portion of a newspaper story from August of 1989 about the man in the bus shelter, but I don't know why it did not post.
Back in 1987 the newspaper wrote about a crotchety old blind man named Bill Sherwood who had taken up residence in the bus shelter at 39th & Belmont.--At the request of some people the shelter was removed in the fall of 1987 and Bill Sherwood vanished, but in 1989 Sherwood who was known to swing his crutch at people who asked him questions reestablished his residence in the bus shelter, and this time TriMet, and Lamb's Thriftway looked the other way.
I can remember when Thriftway stores were everywhere. When I lived in Murrayhill there were two stores within two miles and another less than five miles away. Now I know of none in the Portland area. The stores that used to be close to home are now a Whole Foods, a Safeway, and the third has sat empty for several years.

I wonder if that is Bill Sherwood in the bus shelter in this photo.

Correction
TriMet did remove the bus shelter in the fall of 1987, and Sherwood disappeared from the corner, but it looks like he returned in 1989.

Are there still any Thriftway stores in Portland?
