Hat tip to the engineers that pulled this off. Some of them were crawling around in the bridge structures interior looking for signs of failure. I was there to see it lift off the barges. One support timber fell into the river and that topped the excitement. Then it was a slow lift for several days as I recall.
March 15-16 1973. The 902 foot 6,000 ton center span of the Fremont Bridge was assembled at Swan Island, and was barged to the bridge site on Wednesday morning March 14. At 2 am on Thursday March 15 the hydraulic lifting of the center span began and reached the final height at 5:30 pm on Friday March 16, 1973. After the center span connections were in place the lower level road deck was assembled with the bridge opening on November 11 to pedestrians only, and traffic on the 15th.
