My folks had a thing that they put over the hump between the front seat and the back seat to make the rear seat of the car into one large play area. This is where my brother and I rode on trips to Madras to visit my grandparents or to Coos Baay to visit my aunt and uncle. No car seats, no seat belts, and somehow, we survived.
As I recall all the play structures were built on a asphalt surface, but I don't recall anything being this tall.
