There was a drive-in near my high school and in the back, they had "The Teen Room." On one wall they had a jukebox and a cigarette machine. Remember, this was the "Teen Room."
This machine dispensed from 30 different buttons. Some of the more popular brands were doubled up. The girls who ran the windows and did the cooking looked the other way and kids were allowed to purchase cigarettes and smoke.
It was a different time. Probably more than half of adults smoked, and it wasn't considered to be all that bad health-wise.
The law was you were supposed to be 18 to buy smokes. I think there was even a sticker on the machine saying something along those lines. But buying cigs was no problem, even at the Plaid Pantry.
