Holmes took office after the death of Governor Patterson. The next election he lost to Mark Hatfield.

I was barely out of diapers when Holmes was governor, and I knew he wasn't any good at the job. That's probably best illustrated by the fact he only served the final two years of Patterson's term, and then he was bounced by the people.
