I think they were a great addition to the city too.

Sometimes when I see them running and running without anyone around, it seems wasteful and I wonder if they shouldn’t have an off switch.

The first Benson Bubbler was installed and and placed in operation on SW 5th & Washington in mid June 1912.

Are there any of the purple glass inlaid sidewalks still in downtown?

GBart "Vault Lights" that provided light to basements under the sidewalks before the wide use of electric lighting have mostly been removed in Portland, but some examples have been preserved. The 2019 Google streeview next to the entrance of the "Ace Hotel" on SW Harvey Milk street has a couple of segments, also from August 2023 the streetview shows some segments next to the Galleria on the SW Morrison street side.

TY DG.
