Joe Kennedy wasn't quite the moral person he, as head of "America's Royal Family" is cracked up to be. He was connected to the Irish Mafia in Boston and was a bootlegger during prohibition. Before that, he made his money through shady stock deals.
Joe Kennedy was also a serial philanderer, a trait he passed on to his famous sons. His youngest son Ted was implicated in the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, while involved in an illicit affair with the young woman. He allowed her to drown to cover up his transgressions.
Other than infidelity, Kennedy's sons JFK and RFK were virtual control freaks in assuring the laws regarding politics and government service were closely followed.
