After a lifetime of wondering what it was like, I finally visited PDX-East last year and found it to be a bustling, well-established, interesting place. The downtown was especially charming and was full of what appeared to be tourists. I have no memory of the street lights, but the overall architectural preservation was obvious with buildings from the 19th century everywhere and torturous street layouts that would have all been erased if they were in PDX-West. The farmer's market has been operating since continuously since 1768! No campers, no noticeable graffiti, no MAX (but AMTRAK goes right through town with extensive service). In, all I had a pleasant time and have fond memories. It's worth a trip.
The street lights are all wrong...and rather ugly. Portland, Maine, is also only about 20% the size of PO.
