The Fred Meyer Gateway shopping center was the first shopping center in Oregon, that had 17 additional specialty shops when it opened in August 1954, with more to follow. The Gateway shopping center was redeveloped about 1989-1990 with the 40 high Gateway arch being pulled down by a bulldozer in February 1991. The Fred Meyer arch redefined the area, with businessmen changing from the Woodlawn Park business association to Gateway Boosters. The Gateway Arch was located where the Applebee's restaurant is today.

Interesting. The font on the sign is very reminiscent of Fred Meyer. Did Freddie's have a store there in the early days?

I can only remember that Olds and King opened its first suburban store there. They went the wrong way.

A December 1956 Oregonian story reported that the Fred Meyer Gateway shopping center had grown to 9 buildings with 36 merchants with Olds & King Dept. store opening on 10/19/56. At the time of the of the story 2 additional buildings were under construction.

Correction from original comment should read Woodland Park.

Fred Meyer did not have a store at Gateway before 1954.
