When Bing Russell owned The Mavericks in Portland he heard the story of two car dealer brothers that did NOT get along. One sold Chevys and the other Ford’s on 122nd Ave. That gave him the idea to produce USED CARS starring his son Kurt Russell ( who played for the Mavs) and the great Jack Warden. One of my favorite comedy movies of all time.

Great movie! Based on Marv Tonkin and Ron Tonkin. I remember seeing their dealerships as a child in Portland.

I commented on this movie yesterday morning, but it didn't appear for some reason. I have seen the movie more than once over the years, and I have heard the supposed story that this movie was about Marv & Ron Tonkin. I have never seen any proof that this is true, and it looks to have become a "Portland Urban Myth". The Bing Russell angle is a new twist. Imdb has no info on the Tonkin & Bing Russell connection to the movie, and Wikipedia shows that the Executive Producers were Steven Spielberg and John Milius and was written by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale who also directed the movie.
Wikipedia writes this about the development of the movie
"The idea for Used Cars originated from producer John Milius, who pitched it to Gale and Zemeckis while they were writing the script for "1941" (1979), the film directed by Steven Spielberg. Milius said that he and Speilberg had hoped to one day write a story about a used car salesman outside Las Vegas.
