Liberal, Kansas, became known as the “Pancake Hub of the Universe” due to its unique tradition of hosting the International Pancake Day race. This event began in 1950 when Liberal challenged Olney, England, to a pancake race after seeing a magazine picture of Olney’s race. The race involves women running 415 yards while flipping pancakes, a tradition that has continued for over 70 years, making it a distinctive cultural event and earning Liberal its pancake-themed nickname.
